A Declaration

Thalia residents were able to catch a rare glimpse of history on October 22nd. The Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library was the setting
for a display of an original copy of the Declaration of Independence. It is one of only 26 existing copies of about 200 broadside sheets
printed by John Dunlap in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776. They were used to spread the word of the declaration to the colonies and the
Continental Army troops. This copy was discovered hidden in a picture frame purchased at a flea market. It was later bought by television
producer Norman Lear who since 2000 has allowed the document to tour around the United States.

These copies predate their more famous engrossed copy seen in the National Archives.
